How the two systems differ
A furnace creates heat by burning gas. A heat pump moves heat — in winter it extracts heat from outdoor air and moves it inside; in summer it runs in reverse as a high-efficiency air conditioner. One outdoor unit does both jobs.
Because moving heat takes far less energy than making it, modern heat pumps deliver more heat energy per unit of electricity than any combustion appliance can per unit of gas. The catch has historically been very cold weather — but that matters far less here than in most of the country.
Why our climate favors heat pumps

Where a furnace still wins
- Supply-air temperature: gas heat feels hotter at the register. Some homeowners strongly prefer that blast of warm air.
- Existing infrastructure: if your gas furnace is mid-life and your AC dies, replacing just the AC may be the pragmatic near-term call.
- Electrical panel constraints: older homes may need panel work to support a heat pump — worth pricing before you decide.
The decision framework
- Replacing both heating and cooling at once? A heat pump consolidates two purchases into one and usually wins on lifetime economics here.
- Replacing only the AC on a newer furnace? Consider a heat pump anyway — run it as a dual-fuel system with the furnace as backup.
- All-electric home or going solar? Heat pump, almost without exception.
- Love hot supply air and have cheap gas service? A high-efficiency furnace + AC pairing is still a legitimate choice.
Whichever way you lean, insist on a load calculation (Manual J) rather than a like-for-like tonnage swap — correct sizing matters more than brand or fuel.
